5 Xi'an

It was the imperial seat of at least eleven families before china was unified between 1000 BC and 1000 AD making it one of China's four major capitals. Today, it is a cultural and technological center, being home to Xi'an's industrial space science and technology base.

Its most famous landmarks are the newly discovered Mud Army, the tomb mother-of-first emperor of China. The site of the old Damming Palace contains some original structures and some reconstructions that have been opened to the public only in recent years.

Xi'an also boasts 14th-century city walls, which are more than 12 km (8 miles) long. They are not just part of the history of the city, but traveling in Xi'an sometimes requires going down, above, or around them.
